Former IndyCar drivers VIP guests at Honda Indy Toronto
Al Unser Jr. and Scott Goodyear to interact with fans all 3 days
(TORONTO, ON – July 12, 2023) – “We are very excited to have IndyCar racing greats Al Unser Jr. and Toronto’s Scott Goodyear as VIP guests of FEL Motorsports at this year’s Honda Indy Toronto,” said Chris Bye, President of FEL Motorsports, promoter of the Sports Car Championship Canada (SCCC) presented by Michelin and Emzone Radical Cup Canada (RCC) presented by Michelin race series which will both be featured support races on the race weekend, July 14-16.
Both Unser and Goodyear, who will be among the guests at the FEL Motorsports Hospitality Suite throughout the Honda Indy Toronto race weekend, will interact with race fans at special autograph sessions all three days.
Al Unser Jr. (called “Little Al” or “Al Junior”) is a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and a double IndyCar champion. He competed in Toronto’s very first Indy race known then as the Molson Indy as part of the Champ Car World Series in 1986 and he won the Toronto race two years later in 1988 and again in 1990.
Scott Goodyear first raced at the Toronto Indy in 1987. He enjoyed a 15-year career in the Champ Car Series and IRL (Indy Racing League) from that year until 2001. He holds the record for the most Indy 500 starts of any Canadian race driver with 11. After retiring from racing, Scott was a colour analyst on Indy 500 TV broadcasts 17 years with ABC Sports.
Both Unser and Goodyear remain part of racing history for the closest-ever Indy 500 finish. The 1992 race that year was among the coldest ever at Indianapolis and a number of the favored drivers crashed out in the slippery conditions. Unser’s longtime rival Michael Andretti dominated the race until his car coasted to a stop with 10 laps to go. That left Unser in the lead, but he was being caught by Scott Goodyear who had started the race at the very back of the 33 cars. Although Goodyear had a faster car, he fell short in his run to victory with Unser crossing the finish line by just 0.043 seconds.
Autograph sessions with both Al Unser Jr. and Scott Goodyear will be at the FEL Motorsports paddock, just prior to the SCCC and Emzone RCC driver autograph sessions, as follows:
