What is Sim Racing?

Sim racing, short for simulated racing, is a form of motorsport that takes place in a virtual environment, using software that meticulously replicates real-world driving dynamics and racing conditions. It goes far beyond casual racing video games by including realistic physics (tire wear, suspension behavior, aerodynamics), fully modeled tracks, realistic environmental effects (weather, track surface changes), fuel consumption, damage, and more.

Companies, such as iRacing, use rotating LiDAR scanners to capture precise topographical data to obtain key track features such as bumps, cracks, and patches on a tracks surface. This time consuming process allows the iRacing to provide their clients with the most realistic virtual model of the real track their users will be racing on.

Drivers use specialized hardware: steering wheels with force feedback, realistic pedal setups, optional motion rigs or virtual reality; to get immersive, tactile feedback that simulates what it’s like to drive a real race car. There are hundreds of companies that provide sim racing specific equipment ranging in fundamental design and product quality, this allows racers to mix and match their set ups to work within their personal preferences as well as their budget.
